Before a Benchmade light can illuminate your home, each piece is meticulously designed and constructed in our Portland, Oregon, factory. Our manufacturing team prepares each fixture by scuffing, sandblasting, or buffing the metal parts before giving them a wash of lacquer, powder coating, or paint in one of our exclusive colors. Finally, each light is assembled by hand and tested for quality before being carefully packaged and delivered to your door.

This spacious Lower Level Family Room at our Golden Gate Edwardian project serves multiple functions; as a hang out area for teens, as guest quarters, a media room and a yoga/exercise studio.
The client’s large-scale abstract painting informed the color palette, in sunny yellows, vermillion and plummy blues, lending the space a retro vibe.
We picked fun furniture shapes, like the cloud-like Pukka sidechair from ligneroset paired with a vintage midcentury side table and a hex ottoman, and the large space is anchored by a lively multi-color striped wool rug.

this home is in the CA central valley + is for my clients mother. she’s moving into a new home after spending over 50 years in her old home. we wanted this home to be fresh + cheerful + a total change in direction for this next chapter of her life. i don’t take this lightly. i really want her new home to give her so much happiness….i imagine lady lunches + card games + maybe even new love….you never know!! ✨

Code red!
We swapped traditional white for rich tones of garnet and oxblood for the master bathroom of our Parkside Residence project.
The walls are adorned with tiles in ‘Yearning’ and ‘Aim’ by solusceramics. A Bette Balance countertop washbasin, custom glass shower screen and lighting by schoolhouse bring contemporary glamour. Textures and warmth abound, with terrazzo tiles from sarah_balineum, cork flooring from granorte, and sleek fantini_official hardware. A polished concrete worktop by samlander.maker adds an industrial edge, balancing the room’s deep, dramatic palette.
Those of you with a keen eye will spot our ‘Shimmy stool’ in the corner, a celebration of our ‘Gloriette’ trimmings collection with samuelandsons. Stay tuned for more details soon – watch this space!

The kitchen in the cannon beach cottage project was recently renovated by previous owners but we did some small updates that made a BIG difference. Swipe for before!
1. Swapped the ceiling light out to bring in some warmth with the butterscotch color.
2. Replaced the the cabinet pulls with something more minimal.
3. Swapped out the barstools which allowed us to add another stool and bring in some color.
4. Replaced the refrigerator.
5. Put the microwave and other small appliances in the adjacent pantry/closet (added shelving and an outlet to closet to create a pantry feel).
6. Painted trim and replaced window shades (in entire house).
7. Displayed their cutting boards and added some greenery.
8. Not shown: Swapped the dish and hand soap dispensers for something more aesthetic.

Today on the blog! ✏️ A 'Phase One' Update on Amy's own home renovation project. Here's a snippet:
"As my husband and I are empty nesting—for the fourth time—I am tackling renovating the second floor, which houses three bedrooms, a family room, and a bathroom. I’m trying to get this done relatively quickly and want the project to move smoothly to keep everyone’s time tight and cost-efficient (plus, I don’t want to be under construction all summer). So, I am planning and ordering everything before the contractor shows up.
We live in a small bungalow with three kids' bedrooms upstairs. In the last few years, I have realized that when the kids come home, they are usually with a significant other. So, it feels important to make the second floor more accommodating for six instead of three (hopefully more someday with grandchildren). Each room will have a queen-size bed, storage, and mirrors so that they can get ready in their rooms and feel comfortable."

Today on the blog! ✏️ A 'Phase One' Update on Amy's own home renovation project. Here's a snippet:

As the Stylebulance, my job is to tell you when your decorating 911 needs major surgery or when just a band aid will do. In this case my client’s house came with a rather ornate powder room that wasn’t her style. Instead of ripping everything out and starting over, I thought a simple swap of light fixture would change the entire vibe. Swipe left to see the before pic and see if you don’t agree. Maybe we will still change that wallpaper down the road after we have tackled some bigger projects, but for now it’s a much quieter space with a light fixture that will work with whatever we do next.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day ☘️ from our little bathroom. I thought this was the perfect day to share the remodel we finished of our kid’s bathroom last year. We kept the original vintage sink and tub, refinishing rather than replacing. We added tile, clover wallpaper from svenskttenn and a green sconce from schoolhouse (which is the perfect finishing touch). The mirror and medicine cabinet are original too. Paint is farrowandball Slipper Satin and (my favorite) Oval Room Blue.

It all started with the buffet. We wanted our new kitchen to look like it might have been original, albeit with a few modern touches.
Inset oak cabinets, oil rubbed bronze hardware, quartz countertops, and porcelain backsplash tile with a pattern that nods to the Craftsman style of the house.
We took advantage of the walls being open and took care of a few behind the scenes updates. New insulation, redid and cleaned up some past...creative...electrical work, and removed the chimney that was taken out of service decades ago.
It took 2 months longer than expected, mostly due to inspection delays, but it was worth the wait to add a laundry chute and additional air supply duct upstairs.
We owe so much thanks to all our friends and family that helped with free labor and home cooked meals.

We’re excited to share some of the progress on our new home today. Lighting has been a prime focus, both daylighting and artificial. Here’s a view of the primary bedroom. In the summer this room was a dark cave. We live in the trees! So winter’s leafless light gives us a break from the summer shade. But when the leaves return we’ll be ready. That’s the #schoolhouseelectric Ray flushmount on the ceiling. And by the bed are the #visualcomfort Orbel sconces. It took the electricians some effort to get them located correctly, and to get all the holes in the wall repaired! Small features with a very big payoff.

Simply stunning!
This was the easiest flush mount light I have installed in a while, I’ll just throw that out there. It looks fantastic, puts off a nice amount of light and I’m already planning to purchase a second one. I did buy E26 DTW bulbs from Emery Allen and I highly recommend upgrading the bulbs. I also have the COB bulbs with a wall dimmer and am very pleased with both. The installation & removal of the glass shade is a fantastic design. If you are wiffle waffling on a purchase of this light, do it - you won’t be disappointed…unless you’re a sourpuss.

We live in Germany so we were a little hesitant at first since we were unsure if those could be installed here but customer service did an amazing job of answering questions so we ended up ordering two of the Ray 17“ and everything went smoothly- delivery (taxes were already included which made the entire process soooo much easier and pleasant) and installation… all we had to do was buy different light bulbs (E27).
We are so in love with how they look and glad we decided to give it a go.

GORGEOUS FIXTURES!
I snagged two of these on sale but now that they're installed, I think I would have paid full price. They are incredible! Easy to install - that lever is ingenious! - and warm, glorious light for days!! We have them in our eat-in kitchen but I think they would look great in a bedroom or bathroom (though not sure about dampness rating...). The hardest part was choosing a color but we went with the light gray and they are perfect for our space! Schoolhouse creates and curates the coolest stuff and these are right in line with that trend. LOVE!
