Inside the Design: The Modern Rooftops Quilt

Some pieces just feel like joy. Inspired by the time-honored tradition of quilting, the Modern Rooftops Quilt is a fresh spin on a classic craft. Designed with cheerful color, thoughtful geometry, and a deep appreciation for handmade artistry, it’s a piece that’s rooted in the past while still feeling effortlessly present.

At the heart of this quilt is a balance of opposites: bold yet comforting, structured yet soft. Our design team began by sketching out a playful, abstract pattern inspired by mid-century shed roof architecture. From there, we carefully composed the pattern to fit standard quilt sizes, adding a subtle border and a series of vertical hand-stitched channels to enhance the graphic layout. We grounded the design in a warm, earthy palette—off-white, gray-green, tawny brown, and ochre—then layered in a dusty purple and a pop of red to add movement and surprise. This thoughtful use of color softens the geometry and adds a dynamic quality that keeps the eye engaged. Every element was fine-tuned in close collaboration with our skilled craftspeople in India, whose attention to detail brought our vision to life, stitch by stitch.

The quilting process itself posed unique design challenges. Translating a modern motif into a format traditionally made by hand required a lot of back-and-forth—adjusting proportions, shifting placements, and ensuring that the visual rhythm held across different sizes. But in the end, it was worth every iteration. The result is a quilt that feels deliberate and artful, with every line and color block falling perfectly into place.

True to tradition, we chose woven cotton for both the front and back. Not only does it offer a soft, cozy handfeel, it’s also ideal for hand stitching—allowing each piece to be carefully joined with the care and precision that this process demands. The quilt’s vertical texture adds warmth and movement while preserving the integrity of the bold pattern beneath.

Though originally designed for the top of the bed, the Modern Rooftops Quilt is endlessly versatile. Fold it at the foot of a guest bed, drape it over a reading chair, or keep it close on the sofa for impromptu naps. It’s made for anyone who values craft, comfort, and a dose of unexpected color.

So what sets the Modern Rooftops Quilt apart from those like it? It’s the joyful contradiction: a nod to age-old technique that feels entirely of-the-moment. A piece that honors tradition without being bound by it—proof that everything has the potential to make a bold statement.
