Inside the Design: The Forma Collection
Our design philosophy at Schoolhouse is simple: well-crafted objects should bring joy to the everyday. In our Forma Collection, this idea resonates in each piece—whether it’s the satisfying click of a drawer, the simplicity of curved metal legs gently hugging a wooden tabletop, or a playful flash of color. Much like a beloved family heirloom, this collection was crafted to be more than just practical, it’s meant to bring a sense of connection into every part of the home.
Inspired by the timeless nature of Bauhaus design and the enduring strength of industrial furniture, Forma is designed to make a bold statement wherever it lives. From the sleek and modern mirror to the playfully bright stool, each piece showcases an unadorned, straightforward design that makes this collection endlessly versatile.
Below, we chatted with our design team to learn more about how they brought this playful collection to life.
We were originally inspired by Bauhaus principles, particularly the idea that form follows function. We also wanted to celebrate the movement and gathering of people with the movement of line, which always comes back together. This is apparent in the way the leg linework on the collection’s tables gently hugs the tabletop, before flowing smoothly to the ground. The result is simple and practical, yet playful, combining the design era’s signature minimalism with a touch of Schoolhouse charm.
The dining table came first, born from researching vintage modular furniture and industrial sawhorse tables. After sketching ideas for a modular leg system and experimenting with metal bending shapes, we evolved the double-leg design from an iteration where metal wrapped around the table edge, forming two legs. While we loved the look, the final design offered better functionality and worked with both rectangular and round tops.
The stool follows the same form language, but on a petite scale that focuses on stackability and an exposed edge. We wanted to celebrate the honesty of exposed plywood while adding a playful pop of color designed to pay homage to mid-century designs, all while maintaining a transparent, casual feel.
As for the cabinet, it continues the focus of the linework with brackets that surround the case, subtly referencing the double-leg design. Soft, rounded wood edges balance the cool metal, while friendly knobs and a simple form keep the piece approachable.
When deciding on colors for the collection, we knew that we wanted Persimmon right from the start, but beyond that, we focused on selecting a range of colors that would bring out the playfulness of the design while complementing a wide array of spaces. The final choices balance beautifully with the warmth of the oak, enhancing the overall aesthetic without overpowering the clean lines and structure. Each color feels harmonious, supporting both the form and function of the collection.
What sets this collection apart from others is its playful yet thoughtful mix of metal and wood that combines Bauhaus influences with a sense of nostalgia. Metal-and-wood tables often lean toward a serious or somber tone, but Forma offers something fresh and optimistic. It's unique, cool, and full of personality, offering a fun alternative to typical walnut and steel designs.
Best of all, Forma is light, effortless, and celebrates a perfect balance of color and wood, bringing both practicality and personality to your (or any) space.
