Inside the Design of Benchmade: The Luna Collection

At Schoolhouse, we believe in timeless design that feels both familiar and fresh. The Luna collection is a perfect example of that, blending the clean lines of mid-century modern lighting—think space-age fixtures with streamlined silhouettes —with a subtle contemporary twist, like refreshed proportions and fresh finishes for modern spaces.

Initially inspired by the soft, glowing light of the moon, our design team approached the Luna by looking for the sweet spot between beauty and function. With handblown glass shades, each piece carries a lovely imperfection, adding character to the collection. But that also meant extra care had to be taken to manage the weight when the fixture was hung, especially with larger shades. To keep everything balanced, the team incorporated a rod for added stability, preserving the collection’s sleek silhouette while embracing the little flaws that make each fixture special.

Versatility is at the heart of Luna. Rather than pushing the boundaries of mid-century design with excessive configurations, the team opted to stick with the classics—pendants, sconces, and rods—each piece working in harmony across different settings. The globe form, paired with clean metal lines, lends itself to a variety of spaces, from intimate dining areas to expansive kitchens. And with customizable options for color, size, and glass finish, the Luna collection offers endless ways to make your space your own.

The materials used in the Luna collection are a big part of what gives it so much character. While other lighting manufacturers may leave parts unpainted, we finish the Luna with an attention to detail, including painted interior and exterior components, from the shade cap to the fitter. These details elevate the collection’s simplicity.

The Luna collection is more than just a lighting series—it’s a modern take on the fixtures of the past, offering timeless style with just the right amount of contemporary edge. Its careful balance of form and function, paired with customizable options—more than eight finishes and a variety of sizes—and thoughtful design details, make it a fixture that can truly fit into any space.
