The Designer’s Journal: Annie Downing on Bringing Eclectic, Joyful Spaces to Life

Cozy, luxury bedroom.

With an eye for bold pattern play and a knack for layering vintage finds with modern charm, designer Annie Downing brings an effortlessly cool sensibility to every space she touches. Her Austin home is no exception—bursting with personality, it’s a vibrant reflection of her eclectic, joyful approach to interiors.

Whether she’s designing a countryside retreat in Pennsylvania or dreaming up a new wallpaper collection (with a debut tile line on the horizon), Annie’s work is all about storytelling, soul, and standout style. We caught up with her to talk about what’s inspiring her lately, the pieces she can’t live without, and the Schoolhouse staple she keeps coming back to.

Describe your design style in three words.

Eclectic, Joyful, Layered

Where do you draw your design inspiration from?

Everywhere—travels, historic interiors, vintage textiles, an unusual color pairing in a piece of art, books. I’m always drawn to spaces that tell a story, where every object feels intentional but not overly considered.

What does your home say about you?

Well, it's a constant work in progress. It says that I have a deep love for pattern, color, and pieces with a past. It’s a mix of personal mementos, vintage finds, and things I’ve collected over the years.

What are you working on right now?

We launched our product line last year with ADI Wallpaper, which has been an incredible creative process. I'm working on a second wallpaper collection and also debuting our first tile collection in the Fall! I’m also working on several residential projects, each with its own unique point of view: a Tudor in Austin, a house in the Pennsylvania countryside, and finishing up my own home too!

Can you tell us about your favorite piece of decor in your own home?

This is a difficult question! Probably a vintage Turkish rug I found on a trip to Istanbul. It's colorful and beautiful in the entryway of our home. I feel like it's a fun little welcome when people come to visit.

Can you share what your favorite Schoolhouse product is?

I have many favorites, but the Isaac Sconce is number one. I love using bedside sconces in projects and the Isaac comes in great colors—we have used it several times in bedrooms over bedside tables. It's such a fun, playful, and functional addition to any room.
